The popular pirate ship playground in Aberfeldie/Moonee Ponds is now open after an upgrade in January 2018.
The playground is now almost double the size, with redesigned parking, a new tower slide and rope climbs suitable for older children, improved picnic areas with barbecues, a scooter path around the perimeter and new garden beds and lawn areas.
The timber playground dubbed the ‘Black Sapphire’ is still the highlight.
The pirate ship is particularly suitable for 2- 5 year olds because most of the equipment is not too tall or high. Even the little kids can ‘walk the plank’, falling safely onto the soft sand base.
Lady AB keeps on yelling ‘ahoy me mateys’ as she races around the decks and there are lots of fun pirate elements on board the boat to encourage imaginative play.
You can spin the steering wheel, check out the sheltered ‘Captain’s Quarters’, clang the ship’s bell and look through the telescope.
Lady AB and Baby 2.0 spend most of their time doing loops up the ramp then slipping down the slides with gales of laughter.
The Pirate Ship Playground is a well-designed setting for active and imaginative fun. All that is missing is the buried treasure…
My only niggle is that there’s no shade over the play equipment, which means that visitors are resorting to sheltering under the tree shade, which is right in the middle of the garden beds. Those poor plants are never going to survive being trampled on day after day!
