You can always count on Arts Centre Melbourne to curate interesting, intelligent theatre for the school holidays and Emily Brown and the Thing is no exception.
Based on the book of the same name, the show is about intrepid explorer Emily Brown and her sidekick bunny Stanley. Baby 2.0 and I are invited to join them as they venture into the Dark and Scary Wood, a wintery landscape and to visit the Weird and Whingy Witch to help the ‘Thing’ get to sleep.
Given the book’s basic storyline and simple prose, I thought the show might be a bit junior for older kids. But even this adult was drawn in by the artistry of the engaging actors (including the excellent sound effects), the use of puppetry interwoven with live acting, lovely songs and simple modular set design.
Emily Brown and the Thing is a funny, charming and appealing theatrical experience for young and old. While the book is more suitable for preschoolers the show goes for 55 minutes with no interval, so children 3+ years will more likely sit still for it.
Arrive earlier for a free foyer craft activity to create your own ‘Thing’. If you want to get into the mood go to the show dressed in your favourite pair of pyjamas and bring your special cuddly toy!
