Heide Art Kinder

Heide Art Kinder is a regular art and creative program for kids aged 2-5 at Heide Museum of Modern Art. It offers children and their carers an opportunity to enjoy the museum together in a highly interactive, engaging way.

Our session focuses on the current exhibition, Jenny Watson:  Fabric of Fantasy. The art ranges from whimsical to realistic, and workshop leaders Bernie and Mel help the kids count horses within the array of paintings. Parents and carers seem to enjoy this as much as the kids.

There’s a story session and then it’s time to make some art.

There’s paint, crayons, glue and more, and the children are soon sticking and colouring to their hearts’ content.

Parents enjoy their coffees (included) from Cafe Heide as the kids sip babycinos and prepare for the next activity – a walk in the grounds to hunt for Christmas birds. Cardboard cockatoos on tinsel pipe cleaners adorn a glorious tree and there is great excitement as the children collect one each and return to the studio to decorate it as they munch on sandwiches and fruit.

There’s no sense of being rushed, and Bernie and Mel engage their young charges with natural warmth and encouragement. The time seems to fly. Participants are then welcome to enjoy the grounds or return to the gallery as admission is included in the ticket price.

Heide Art Kinder is a beautiful way to help children begin to appreciate art organically. The ticket price is well worthwhile when you consider the quality of the experience for both adults and kids.

Heide Art Kinder runs regularly during school terms. The next sessions are on January 31 (sculpture park) from 10am-11.30am and February 15 (Jenny Watson:  Fabric of Fantasy) from 10am-11.30am.

Tickets are $38 for an adult and child; this includes morning tea and full admission to the museum and grounds.

Heide Museum of Modern Art also runs Heide Art Babies for babies 0-18 months and their carers plus school holiday programs for different age groups – visit www.heide.com.au for more information.

HOT Tips:

  • Pack a picnic lunch and stay after Heide Art Kinder to enjoy the grounds, or have lunch at Cafe Heide.
  • There are two car parks at Heide – the car park at the main entry is quite sm all; follow the signs to the larger car park if the front one is full.
  • If you can avoid bringing a pram you’ll probably both get more out of the experience. There’s no touching the art but you can get up close.
