This weekend all over Melbourne is the Garage Sale Trail where you can find bargains all over town. It’s also the start of Children’s Week with lots of free events for families.

CBD/Docklands

  • Diwali Lights Light House (Thu 19 Oct – Tue 24 Oct) – Melbourne’s newest architectural icon, Light House at 888 Collins Street in Docklands, comes to life this Diwali in a display of light and cheer for the whole family to enjoy.
  • Melbourne Dumpling Festival (Fri 20 Oct) – See Melbourne’s best Chinese Restaurants – Tim Ho Wan Melbourne, China Red, China Chilli and Dragon Boat – go head-to-head in a dumpling dine-in like no other.
  • Melbourne Festival (Fri 13 Oct – Sun 22 Oct) – feast of dance, theatre, music, visual arts, multimedia and outdoor events including the House of Mirrors.
  • Blues Music Festival (Sun 22 Oct) – FREE live music, food trucks and licence bars.
  • MOSAIC Festival at the Market (Sun 22 Oct) – celebrate multicultural women in Victoria. The festival will feature a range of food traders from right across the world, plus live music, dance performances, cultural costumes, art displays and craft activities.
  • MPavilion (Fri 20 Oct  – Sun 4 Feb 2018) – An event hub, a meeting place and an invitation to experiment, each MPavilion brings creative collaborators together to present a free, four-month program of talks, workshops, performances and installations from October to February.
  • Play Pod State Library of Victoria (Fri 13 Oct – 5 Dec) – Play Pod is the SLV’s program for children aged under 8 years with activities to read, create and play. This season’s theme is The Very Noisy Bear.
  • Composers Club Artplay ( Fri 20 Oct – Sat 28 Oct) Through improvisation, explore the sounds created by a variety of unique percussion instruments, including gongs from around the globe
  • Surviving Scary – Design workshop Artplay (Sun 22 Oct) This workshop is for designers and theatre makers extraordinaire, create a world that will survive scary!
  • Family Sundays: Melbourne International Games Week (Sun 22 Oct) – Join Mario and all his friends in a day bursting with interactive activities and great gameplay.
  • ArtPlay Inside Out (Wed 25 Oct, Thu 26 Oct) – free drop in creative play for kids 5 and under. Full review.

  • Kids Oktoberfest Munich Brauhaus (Sun 22 Oct – Sun 29 Oct) – every Sunday kids eat for free, face painter and activity packs.
  • Wallace & Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman (Fri 20 Oct – Sun 29 Jan) – take an extraordinary trip from sketches and models through to elaborate sets as these beloved characters take shape on screen. Full review. 
  • The Pool: Architecture, Culture and Identity ( Fri 20 Oct – Thu 1 Feb 2018) – A multi-sensory installation of water, light, scent and sound, The Pool is an interactive space, complete with wooden decking and pool lounge chairs.

  • Darebin Music Feast (Thu 19 Oct – Sun 22 Oct) – Running for over 20 years, the 11-day festival is a celebration of Darebin’s musical community.
  • The Megaphone Project (Thu 19 Oct – Sun 22 Oct) – Popping up at 6 surprising locations throughout The Darebin Music Feast, The Megaphone Project features 25 bright red megaphones that invite visitors to experiment with sound and play.
  • Finders Keepers Market (Fri 20 Oct – Sun 22 Oct) – over 250 design and art stalls.
  • Collingwood Toy Library (Sat 21 Oct) – Creative workshop using tactile materials with author and illustrator Tai Snaith for 5-10 year olds. Plus a stay and play session for 0-6 year olds, learn to play new board games for 7-12 year olds and a sausage sizzle for the whole family. Other events up to Friday 27 October.
  • Preston Food Trucks Indian Street Food Festival (Fri 20 Oct – Sun 22 Oct) – Preston brings Mumbai to Melbourne! An event to heat up guests we are showcasing the best in Indian street fare, with spicy and flavour packed street food
  • Rockin @ Redleap (Sun 22 Oct) – performances, storytime, face painting, animal farm at Mill Park.

  • Melbourne Museum – Romp & Stomp Fun Day for Children (Wed 25 Oct) – live music, storytelling, art and craft, and dress-ups.
  • Nature Play Banyule (Thu 26 Oct) – Join us for a gentle walk through Brown’s Reserve. Enjoy the eucalypt woodland, picturesque stream and views across the valley.
