Nature Boy in a family-friendly cafe in Murrumbeena with the benefit of an outdoor play area that’s shaded and cubby house.
The frontage of Nature Boy is deceiving, as you can only spot a small dining area from the street. But head to the side corridor, beyond a small astroturf courtyard…and there’s another whole building/dining area with a cubby house at the end!
The back courtyard is made just for families. A large wooden cubby house is filled with toys, there’s a few ride-on toys and the whole area is covered in synthetic grass under a small shade sail.
The various tables outside bask in outdoor heaters though if you kids are old enough you can sit indoors by the floor to ceiling windows and still have a good view of the play area. There’s free wifi too.
There are numerous high chairs and plenty of pram space outside, though I can’t be confident that a double pram will fit beyond the front room.
The menu is split into breakfast and lunch though everything is available at all times. The kids menu is basic, with a ham cheese and tomato toastie and eggs on toast ($6), pancakes ($7.50), coco pops ($6) and chips ($5.50).
I choose a vegetarian mushroom burger with a grain salad from the lunch menu ($17), a leaf-tea chai ($4.50) and a cheese toastie for Baby 2.0 ($6).
The Asian-inspired burger packs a big umami punch and puts insipid veggie burger patties to shame. The grain salad contains lots of pomegranate seeds and raisins and the sweetness contrasts well with the earthiness of the mushrooms.
