Test Lab is a maker space for children and is included in general museum entry. You can drop in for general tinkering in the Shed which has open constructive play using a variety of kid-friendly materials, be inspired by what others have created in the Studio (both professional and amateur) and participate in paid workshops in the Workshop.
At first I didn’t think Test Lab would be suitable for Lady AB (6yo) but I was wrong – we spent about 30 minutes testing and experimenting our peg board ball run creation, with a big cheer every time we corrected a mistake and the ball rolled the way we meant it to. The only thing is that with younger kids more active adult involvement is required.
There are other stations to explore too – I spotted magnetic poles and some shiny square panels but couldn’t drag Lady AB away from the peg board. Everyone young and old is encouraged to experiment and I saw a lot of adults getting really into it too! Test Lab is exactly the sort of hands-on STEM learning I love to encourage so I really wish that it was a permanent fixture at Scienceworks.
