Scienceworks is popular any day of the week but there’s a special atmosphere for Little Kids’ Day In, with one-off activities and shows amping up the excitement for kids and carers alike. Every month there is a different theme and during our visit it was all about creepy crawlies.
Story time is a huge hit. The presenter has a microphone to make sure no one misses the action, and well-chosen stories accompanied by some creatively reworked songs really delight the audience.
There are creepy-crawlies (in containers, of course) as well as drawing, workshops, tours of the Pumping Station and more.
There’s also all the usual fun stuff to do, including shooting hoops and handballing in the sport area, the giant digger at Nitty Gritty Super City, and the new Freewheeling exhibit that explores cycling.
Note the next Little Kids’ Day In is on Monday 6 February from 10am-4pm. The theme for this event will be a Deep Sea Disco and will feature a stellar line-up of play-based activities and shows. The event will feature a Bubbleologist, live marine animals (such as sea stars, mottled shore crabs, sea cucumbers & urchins) and touchable objects from our museum as well as deep sea disco where children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite underwater creatures.
Little kids are free, admission for big kids (otherwise known as adults) is $14. Museum Victoria members receive free entry. Additional charges apply for the Planetarium and Lightning Room shows.
Thanks to journalist and mum of two Erika Jonsson for her guest post!
- Change facilities and pram access available (though be warned it gets busy, so if the pram isn’t a necessity you’ll probably have an easier time without it).
- Fast-lane entry for Museum Victoria members.
- Arrive early if you want to beat any queues, especially when the weather is wet!
- Pram parking available for story time
- $3 parking on site.
