Imaginary Pets with Helen Kocis, Artplay, Birrarung Marr, Melbourne

Imaginary Pets is a fun drawing and making workshop for 5-8 year olds with Melbourne visual artist Helen Kocis at Artplay. Lady AB thoroughly enjoyed the 1.5 hour session and our imaginary pet ‘Judy’ is now firmly installed in her bedroom and I’m told, never to be discarded or dismantled!

The session starts with a drawing exercise using charcoal. As one of the youngest participants I’m not sure Lady AB understands the concept of shading to transform a picture from 2D to 3D, but she enjoys just the drawing anyway. What I like is the ‘drawing warm ups’ where kids are asked to draw big, small, fast, light and dark.

The second part of the workshop is where children are asked to make an imaginary pet using foam balls, fabric scraps, wooden skewers, pipe cleaners and dressmaking pins.

We have the most fun with this time as we decide how we were going to decorate our pet, how many eyes and feet and antennae it is going to have and what colour we are going to make its shoes.

The final part of the workshop is back at the drawing table where children are instructed to observe the features of their pet and to draw its likeness. Lady AB does a pretty accurate job portraying Judy!
