Culinary Carton

Culinary Carton is a new Melbourne food delivery company aimed at helping people create delicious and healthy dinners, without the hassle of shopping or selecting meals.

I have had many false starts with meal planning, regular grocery shopping lists etc etc and basically have just decided that level of organisation is just not for me.

Culinary Carton have chefs who shop for restaurant quality, fresh produce, prepare it in their Melbourne kitchen and then send it to a customer’s home accompanied by step-by-step recipe cards. All their meals are designed to be cooked in under 35 minutes or your money back.

So we turned on our stopwatch and tried out one of their ‘meat’ boxes.

We received a large styrofoam box packed with fresh ingredients with three meals serving four on our doorstep.

The quality of the produce was excellent. The fish was clear and bright-eyed, the meat was firm and veggies weren’t limp.

And as promised, every meal took around 30 minutes or less to make. That’s because literally everything has been cut, measure, prepared and bagged for you, down to the exact quantity of soy sauce and rice vinegar you need. You basically just have to open the packets with the same coloured sticker and pour ingredients together in the right order. It also means a lot of individual plastic packaging though so personally I don’t mind a bit of chopping and using some staple pantry ingredients to cut down on the waste

Our favourite family meal was the yakitori togarashi chicken. Literally throw the skewers onto the grill, make up the salad, pour on the dressing and voila! A healthy meal that satisfied everyone. Because everything is prepped for you the kids were able to helped out with dinner. In fact, they couldn’t keep their hands off the skewers – luckily the portions were extremely generous too.

The other two meals were a bit trickier with kids – whole roast rainbow trout and raw beef salad with quinoa salad. I happily prepared and ate them but they’re not meals that really cater for most children’s palates. So it’s worth checking out their menu to see if their meals will generally suit you family.
