Sunshine Children's Garden collage

As regular readers will know Sunshine Children’s Garden  was a free hands-on construction play event that Jo Skladzien (Small Scapes) and I hosted Saturday 4 July 2015 at Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre.

The day was a great success! We had so many happy families come and visit us to transform a vacant shop into a garden playscape using recycled cardboard and other materials:

  • 10 shopping trolleys full of cardboard;
  • 6 tins of paint;
  • 190 crayons;
  • 20 rolls of coloured duct tape;
  • 15 rolls of masking tape;
  • 20 pairs of scissors;
  • 4 stanley knives;
  • 23 free coffees for adults;
  • over 50 families building; and
  • 5 hours of fun!

I particularly loved seeing Dads get down on their hands and knees build with their kids, the smiling pride of kids as they showed me their creations to be photographed and witnessing the immense creativity of young minds. A highlight was seeing a Dad cut cardboard with a sleeping baby on his lap, watching a whole Vietnamese family intently making cardboard vehicles and seeing adults really getting into the activity long after the kids had lost interest :)

The final installation is now on display for the community to enjoy until Monday 13 July. Go and check it out!
