Oliver’s Garden Cafe in Moonee Ponds combines the best features of a child-friendly cafe. It’s spacious and well-furnished with numerous high chairs, there are lots of items on the menu (including a kids menu) and best of all, it’s located right next to a large playground.
No wonder that it’s filled with families, prams and happy kids.
Oliver’s Garden Cafe is located in a rambling heritage listed cottage and Queens Park is one of the prettiest parks I’ve visited in Melbourne. There’s even a large central lake with spurting fountains for viewing pleasure.
I visited with fellow blogger Veggie Mama on a sunny day and was lucky enough to snag an outside bench table right by the playground, as the inside space was very small. Our kids immediately made a beeline for the slide while we organised high chairs and menus through the handy coffee window.
The food we tried ranged from great to ok. The large milkshake made with yoghurt came out properly cold in a tall metal cup. My brown rice balls were three loosely compacted balls of rice studded with pumpkin then lightly fried. The pumpkin gnocchi was the least successful as the sauce was similar in taste and texture to tinned pumpkin soup. From the kids menu, the fairy bread, waffle and toast with vegemite were exactly as you’d expect. If I wasn’t so distracted keeping an eye on the kids I would have had more time to ponder the menu and next time I would choose differently.
While there is an indoors dining area Oliver’s Garden Cafe is definitely an outdoor destination so good thing the weather is warming up.
