A ‘family’ is not necessarily a mum, dad and kids these days, and that’s why we’ve really enjoyed reading the review copies of Melbourne author Bronny Fallens’ children’s book series My Super Family with our kids.
My Super Family celebrates diversity in the definition of ‘family’. We think this is an important message for our kids as our extended family is as varied as any other modern family these days. There are single parents, blended families, de facto relationships, adopted children, gay singles and married couples.
My Super Single Dad is the fourth and newest book in the My Super Family children’s book series – the others are My Super Single Mum (my personal favourite as I think the mum is particularly cool!), My Two Super Dad and My Super Groovy Gran.
In My Super SingleDad a little boy and his single dad enjoy their typical day together riding bikes and playing pretend sword fights. The simple rhymes and colourful illustrations are lighthearted and fun but the book has an underlying message that families, in whatever form, are all about providing love, security and safety.
I think it’s important that children that come from alternative family structures should be able to read stories and characters that they can relate to and all children learn that families come in different shapes and sizes. I thought it was really interesting that Lady AB, who is Little Miss Why everything at the moment, didn’t question me about why the characters in the books had two dads or only one mum etc. A small indication that prejudices about what is a considered a ‘natural’ or ‘normal’ family structure is socially conditioned.
My Super SingleDad is available in bookstores and www.bronnysbooks.com RRP $15. The Little Bookroom in Carlton is holding a launch for My Super Single Dad this Saturday 18 October.
