Keeper Kids Melbourne Zoo   Updated May 2016

Melbourne Zoo is a traditional zoo set up with lots of storybook animals to see including tigers, giraffes and orangutan. While the kids both enjoy looking at the animals they REALLY love Keeper Kids. In fact, we will often visit Keeper Kids for an hour or so and skip the rest of the zoo, especially if the weather’s wet and cold.

Keeper Kids Melbourne Zoo

Keepers Kids is an indoor play area designed for 3-8 year olds with a zoo theme and it is included in zoo entry. You’ll find it right near the main entrance, next to Meerkat Cafe.

It’s a space for play-based learning with lots of interesting things to discover about zoo-keeping, horticulture, construction, palaeontology and being a vet.

There are loads of toys, dress ups, books and informative teaching panels, with a live exhibit in one corner which houses cheeky meerkats.

The main attraction for me is that it’s an indoors, secure play area for little people – great for really hot summer days or the freezing winter. The central area has seating from which you can see all the different areas so there are no blind spots. Note that you can’t take food or drink inside.

A recent addition to Keeper Kids is the outdoor play area.

Kids can dress up as a researcher, climb aboard the research jeep, visit the field tent to collect their equipment and look for endangered wildlife such as the Eastern Barred Bandicoots, Corroboree Frog and  Helmeted Honeyeater.

If you visit Keeper Kids on a weekday afternoon it is virtually empty and it is very busy during weekends and school holidays so plan your visit for off-peak times if possible for the best experience.

Keepers Kids ensures that we are regular visitors of Melbourne Zoo – rain, hail or shine! Membership costs $90 per adult and kids can be registered on the same membership for free. You also get 15% off the gift shop and discounts on special workshops and exhibitions.
