There are lots of family-friendly events happening for Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2014. Given that Lady AB is only three and not really into comedy yet we went along to Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall, a children’s dance event for under 5s by Australian-born, London-based DJ Monski Mouse.
The disco was held in The Famous Spiegeltent, a superbly kid-friendly venue which this year has set up camp right in the centre of Federation Square. For 45 minutes Monski Mouse played records and her two dancers led us all as we grooved to songs as varied as Single Ladies, Love Cat and Sway. The atmosphere was fun and frivolous and it was so cute watching the kids abandon themselves to the music, trying to follow the moves two beats behind. I thought the ‘adult’ songs were more fun than the funked up nursery rhymes (maybe because I enjoyed singing along to them more) but I don’t think Lady AB really cared.
While all kids tend to enjoy music and dancing (though one little boy just cried with his hands over his ears) I think kids aged 2+ will enjoy the Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall the most and not get too overstimulated. The tickets individually aren’t expensive at $15 but as every parent and kid needs a ticket that’s effectively at least $30 for 45 minutes of dancing that you could in theory do in your lounge room. So my advice is keep crawlers and babies at home. Also note that you will need a hand getting the pram up the stairs of the Spiegeltent. After our energetic workout Lady AB and I enjoyed crepes at Roule Galette, making it a fun outing for young and old.
