The Farm Cafe is a charming cafe adjoining Collingwood Children’s Farm which serves wholesome food to lots of happy families and farm-goers.

The wooden tables and rickety little stools lend a rustic feel to the cafe, in keeping with its situation in sight of the vegetable patches and chicken coops. The seating is in nooks and crannies and at all different levels, making it a fun place to explore for little ones who are sick of the high chair – though there are plenty of high chairs if you need one. There’s a handy wheelchair/pram ramp to the takeaway area and plenty of room to park a pram.

The cafe can be very busy on the weekends, particularly during the Farmers Markets which are held every second Saturday 8-1pm. They don’t take bookings but if there’s a wait for a table they give you a pager and you can walk around until a table is ready!

The menu at The Farm Cafe pays homage to its locality and surroundings – a bit of the country for city folk – with a focus on local, seasonal and fresh produce. A lot of the menu is healthy, including my super salad with quinoa, peas, lettuce, currants, toasted almonds and cauliflower hommus ($16.50).

Items on the kids menu include poached eggs, toast, sausage rolls, sandwiches ($4-$5.50). A recent innovation is the kids lunch box ($7.50) with a cheese sandwich, fresh fruit and house baked treat. My kids LOVE getting their food served in boxes and it offers good value considering the sandwiches are $5.50. I just wish that they’d used grainy Dench sourdough bread instead of nutrition-free sliced white loaf.

When you can watch a cow get milked a few steps away from the cafe it only seems right that you should order a milkshake. The milk they use is thick and creamy, lending a indulgent frothiness to the drink. I think it’s one of the best milkshakes for kids in Melbourne!

Rather than ordering milkshakes from the kids’ menu ($3.70) I highly recommend getting a adult-sized milkshake ($5.70) and several straws for sharing. An adult’s milkshake comes in a steel cup, keeping the contents properly cold (the kids size comes in a plastic cup) and though it costs 1.5x the price of the kid’s size I think you get triple the quantity!

You can request any leftovers to be poured into takeaway coffee cup, perfect for sipping as you tour the farm.

The Farm Cafe is a showcase for wholesome, delicious food and the charming sunny setting is a great way to recharge after a trip to Collingwood Children’s Farm or the monthly Farmer’s Market
