Regular readers will know that our extended family is based mostly in Queensland, which means that we make regular visits to the Sunshine State. This gives us a chance to explore and review kid and family-friendly venues outside of Melbourne in case you travel interstate too.

If you’re in Brisbane one of our favourite places to visit (with or without Lady AB) is the Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art in South Bank. The are lots of child-friendly activities within the galleries as well as in the general area – the buildings are by the banks of the Brisbane River and within close vicinity of the South Bank Parklands. Other than the hair-tearing confusion of the surrounding streets and general parking situation it is a relaxing way to spend a day (may we suggest travelling via bus or ferry to the location!).

One of the most popular events for children is the gallery’s free Toddler Tuesday program. Toddler Tuesday runs weekly from 10.00am to 10.45am (first session) and 11.00am to 11.45am (second session) for most of the year and it is an arts education program designed for children aged 18 months to 4 years.

Normally it is held in the GOMA Children’s Arts Centre and during the 45 minutes the children engage with one Collection work by doing craft/drawing activities, story-telling and singing/movement games. Lady AB enjoyed making her rice shaker (she loves drawing and pasting at the moment) but was less engaged by the stories and movement given the number of other of older kids that were closer to the action.

Bookings for Toddler Tuesday are extremely popular so you will have to get in early. The same program is repeated across an 8 week period and a place can only be booked once during the 8 week cycle.

The 2013 Toddler Tuesday program commences in February 2013 so check the website in early January to complete the online booking form.
