P1080398 395x600 HOT: La Madre Bakery, 18 Milton Street, Bell Park

La Madre Bakery is located in Geelong but well-known in Melbourne. Their bread is sold at discerning grocery stores and delis across the city and their excellent reputation means that if you’re in Geelong or on your way to the coast and you like your bread it’s worthwhile dropping into their store. It’s not too far off the highway (an hour away from Melbourne) and it’s very easy to find amongst the small cluster of suburban shops. Just look out for the ‘Goodness Here’ sign and follow your nose for the aromas of a proper bakery.

Unlike many bakeries I’ve visited, the whole kitchen is there for customers for see. Dozens of be-hatted bakers stand at the stainless steel benches kneading dough, there’s a flurry of activity near the ovens and fresh bread is piled onto trolleys that are then rolled just metres away to the front counter. By opening up their operations for the world to see it’s obvious that they take pride in their process of baking delicious artisan sourdough and sweet treats.

With Christmas coming up they have launched their Christmas range which includes shortbreads, biscotti, chocolate-dipped orange slices and gingerbread angels. Plus if you’re in the Geelong area, this year La Madre are making a limited run of 100 gingerbread houses, which can be bought constructed or flat packed for construction and decoration at home. Orders must be placed via phone (03 5272 1727) or email (info@lamadre.com.au) by Friday 9 December for pickup from their bakery in Geelong.

Giveaway! Thanks to La Madre I have one flat-packed Gingerbread House to giveaway. I don’t have a photo as only 100 gingerbread houses have been made and I didn’t receive one for this review. But I have eaten their gingerbread before and assure you it’s delicious! The flatpack will include a silver base, 2 side walls, 2 end walls, 2 roof panels, 4 coloured fondant roof tiles plus instructions.

To win, all you have to do is leave a comment and the winner will be drawn on Wednesday 14 December. Good luck!

The winner of the Ecostore giveaway is Pia! Your prize will be sent out to you shortly.

PS If you’d like another chance to win Christmas treats from La Madre, pop over to my Melbourne blog MEL: HOT OR NOT for your chance to win a La Madre Christmas Hamper!

My six year old niece is visiting from Germany this Christmas. Even though Germany’s the spiritual home of gingerbread, I reckon the La Madre one would blow her away.

Mmmmm… gingerbread! I have the perfect family to give this to if I won who come from Geelong. They have 2 very active boys and a little girl. This might be a nice quiet activity that would keep them all engaged.

What a magical and delicious treat for our first Christmas as a little family! (Of course, we’ll have to eat our baby’s share, but it’s a parental sacrifice we’re willing to make).
